Dungeons & Dragons Van Richten's Guide to Ravenloft Announced
Finally, some good content! Most supplementary books for 5th edition have skewed towards newer trends. The publisher Wizards of the Coast has been dipping into settings inspired by their other game Magic: The Gathering, with Guildmasters’ Guide to Ravnica and Mythic Odysseys of Theros. Wizards has also given a lot of consideration to new-generation RPG fans with Matt Mercer’s Explorers’ Guide to Wildemount. The oldest old-school 5th edition has gone is Eberron: Rising from the Last War, which is an awesome setting aging like fine wine, but not really old school.
Now, as a follow-up to last year’s Curse of Strahd adventure, Wizards of the Coast is finally bringing the moody, dreadful and fascinating setting from that adventure to new audiences. Ravenloft originally came to be in 1983, a staggering 28 years ago. Ravenloft is older than many D&D players! Everyone gets to explore the bleak monstrousness of humanity in Van Richten’s Guide to Ravenloft, due out May 18th, 2021.
The new book not only includes history, setting, and monsters for the Ravenloft Demiplane of Dread, but it gives dungeon masters tools to create their own Domain of Dread horror setting. Players get awesome new toys as well, including subclasses for bards - the spooky college of spirits - and warlocks - unrelenting undead patrons. And the all-new Dark Gifts expand player characters’ powers, while showing that in Ravenloft, nothing comes for free.
We can’t wait to craft our own gothic horror story for one of the best fantasy role-playing games ever.
