A Game of Thrones Catan: Spotlight Series

We want to say thanks again to all the players that came out this week! We had the chance to play A Game of Thrones Catan: Brotherhood of the Watch! Our demo nights are great for an introduction to board games, or to find something new for your collection. If you miss a board game from a past demo night, you can find them in our shop's library!

For fans of the books or television series, Game of Thrones Catan provides familiar themes and recurring characters, such as 'the wall', wildlings, and the Night’s Watch. Even if you are unfamiliar with the series, this version can be played without the Game of Thrones variant, which still allows you to enjoy the classic Catan experience. In classic Catan, gain resources to build roads and structures, which earn you victory points . The Game of Thrones Edition is an advancement on the classic game with essentially the same rules, but with some minor adjustments to the theme such as the changes to the physical board.

Winter has arrived and with it the rushing threat of giants, climbers, and wildlings! Build guards to defend the wall against their advance, and prevent them from breaching the wall. Players may lose if the wall is overcome with wildlings, so there is a slightly cooperative aspect. Among the wildlings joins Tormund as the Robber, who moves around the map and prevents resource production and steals cards from other players. The final addition to this variant are Hero Cards, which feature many hand drawn depictions of popular characters. These cards have their own abilities. Activate them during your turn or swap them out for something more strategically useful.

If you don’t already own Catan, this could be a great addition to your collection since you can also play it as the base game. In the box are plenty of fantastic wildling miniatures, which are tempting to paint. The base Catan experience requires at least two players, while the Brotherhood of the Watch experience requires a minimum of three. As a medium-weight strategy game, expect games to last anywhere from an hour to two hours. If you want to check this game out, come to the shop and take a look!

Next week we are excited to be playing Root, a successful kickstarter produced by Leder Games. Play as adorable woodland creatures in this asymmetrical war game, battling over who will gain control of the woodlands. Will it be the current feline rulers, the mysterious vagabond or the overthrown eyrie? Come next week to play and battle it out!
